The Consuming Fire - Book Review

The Consuming Fire is the middle book in The Interdependency trilogy, by John Scalzi.

Not a lot goes on, on a macro level - mostly more plotting against the Emperox, and an expedition to a planet that had fallen off the Flow, which does get important information and some important revelations - including about why the Flow is collapsing.

Overall, very good.

Voxatron - PC Game Review

Voxatron is a 3D shooter using voxels (volumetric pixels). These were quite popular in the early 90s, and I remember Comanche (one of the first games I played that had them) fondly. Right now Voxatron is an alpha, but it is still fun. The biggest contributor to that, is that shooting out parts of the map is part of the game (for example, you can shoot out a column to get objects on top). There are also several guns available, as well as explosives and a build gun that shoots persistent blocks. Looks and sound are very retro, but very adequate for the theme. The game is tiny - 15MB installed.

Solved - You have an incorrect version of driver "vmx86.sys" - VMWare Workstation 8

I have just installed VMWare Workstation 8 over my old VMWare Workstation 6.5 on Windows 7. On my first run I already got the error message: Could not get vmx86 driver version: The handle is invalid. You have an incorrect version of driver "vmx86.sys". Try reinstalling VMware Workstation. Failed to initialize monitor device. Obviously, I was concerned, but there is a simple way to solve it - just right-click the VMWare Workstation icon and use Run as Administrator. This is a bit annoying, but at least it is easy to solve. Update: I forgot to mention it, but as Dave said on the comments, you can right-click on the program shortcut, choose Properties, Compatibility tab and check Run as Administrator so that it will always run properly. Do unto Others - Book Review

Do Unto Other - by Michael Z. Williamson - is another book of the Ripple Creek bodyguards, set in the Grainne universe. After reading Hamilton and Asher's super high tech universes, this one is a bit of a letdown for me, in that area. However, the usual action of Williamson's books makes this one a satisfactory read. The odds against the bodyguards is huge as usual, and there are plenty of explosions, fights and intrigue. Very enjoyable. On a personal note, it was funny to read about a miner revolt as I'm replaying Red Faction:Guerilla - which covers a miner's revolt and was horribly buggy and slow on my old computer, but runs great at full HD at the current. Final Note: this book is available at Webscriptions  as a pack. Given that there are other good books (and some I've already reviewed here), if you use a Kindle or any other e-book reader, this might be a good alternative.
