Vesper - PC Game Review

Vesper is a platformer/puzzle. The art style is very interesting. It can be quite confusing. It seems to focus on someone that downloaded into a robot? There are bits spread across the landscape that seem to explain the story. The game doesn't feel like most, and have some interesting mechanics. It is a platformer, but seems very forgiving on jumps. Mostly you go around while being hunted and avoiding being killed by several kind of robot sentinels. Story start was crazy slow (like several minutes without almost any action). Even the game itself is a little tiresome, probably a bit because the landscape barely changes, and music is a bit minimalist.

Carrion - PC Game Review

Carrion is an interesting title. It is a platformer, but in it you are a tentacle filled mass which escaped from a lab, and goes around trying to escape and killing people.  Graphics are retro, and pretty well done. Movement looks great, as well as manipulation of the place - such as opening doors, pulling objects, etc. Apparently you can acquire powers - such as throwing webs that allow to trap people temporarily, or moving objects you can't reach. The only problem I have with the game is that sometimes things you can enter or manipulate aren't obvious. And the maps can be a little like mazes at time. Overall, very clever, and strongly recommended.

Zombotron - PC Game Review

Zombotron is a platform shooter. It looks pretty nice, and I do enjoy all the physics actions you can do, such as dropping things on enemies' heads to kill them. What I didn't like it is the bosses, and how different they are from the rest of the game. So for the first one, I had to look it up on the net how to kill it, for example. Overall, good.

Mushroom 11 - PC Game Review

Image
Mushroom 11 is a PC platformer. Quite common, right? Yes, but you are some kind of green ooze, which moves when you erase parts of it, by multiplying elsewhere. That, and with great graphics. It is very clever, and very innovative, but I only felt it was somewhat fun. Interesting, though.

Broforce - PC Game Review

Image
Broforce is an interesting retro 2D platform shooter. You play as several 80s movies characters, such as Rambo, Ripley from Alien, Robocop, TimeCop, MacGyiver (one of the best - throws explosives), etc, etc. Each has their own different guns and skills. And every time you die or free another one (they are in cages around the levels) you switch. It is still an Early Access game, and since it is been this way for so long, I'm not sure if there will ever an official release, but it is playable now. The coolest part is how explosions and fires can destroy pretty much everything. There are plenty of user maps available, too. The most annoying thing I can think of about it is that your firing range can vary a lot from characters to character, and can be a lot less than your enemies. Overall, pretty much recommend for the price.

Risk of Rain - PC Game Review

Image
Risk of Rain is an action platformer. It has random spawning enemies, retro graphics, and roguelike elements. It is fairly hard, and there are several interesting items you can purchase spread randomly around the game. The soundtrack has some pretty good tracks (mixed with some other I didn't care for). Overall, I don't like it. I feel it'd be nicer if there was a sense of progression between games (such as Rogue Legacy). Of course, I am not a big fan of platformers.

Ethan: Meteor Hunter - PC Game Review

Image
Ethan: Meteor Hunter is a platformer where you play a rat with special powers - freezing time and moving objects while time is frozen. Graphics and sound are adequate, but I didn't like the gameplay (I am not a big fan of platformers, though). Not bad, but not recommended either. Try the demo if you think you might like it.

The Floor is Jelly - PC Game Review

The Floor is Jelly is an interesting 2D platformer with deformable floors and walls. It looks very nice, and the music is fitting. You mostly jump around, taking advantage of the jelly like consistency of the floor to get boosts if you jump at the right time. This also applies to walls. You use this to reach doors, skip the spikes and get the unlocks you need to get to the next level. However, while I get the mechanics of jumping around, I still don't enjoy them. So far me gameplay is fairly flat... and not fun at all. Not recommended, but your mileage may vary, specially if you are a platformer fan.

Fez - PC Game Review

Fez is an interesting puzzle platformer. The unusual part is that you can rotate your world around, which you need to do to get cube shards - which are used to unlock doors. The visual and sound are full on retro, with some cute extra effects. The one thing that really annoys me is the use of controller only control hints (also, using Enter to go to menu, and using escape for a map!). I prefer to use the keyboard in almost all games, and you have to figure out the equivalent keyboard controls. Other than that, it is pretty nice.

Rocketbirds Hardboiled Chicken - PC Game Review

Rocketbirds Hardboiled Chicken is a neat action platformer. In this game, you are a chicken with a rocket pack, attacking some sort of albatross nation with an evil leader. Graphics are pretty good - specially so for the cut scenes - and music is pretty good too. Gameplay is OK - not bad, but I didn't feel it was particularly fun. There are regular platform levels - with minimal jump puzzles, at least as far as I played - where you mostly shoot around. There are also some section where you fly with your rocket pack. This game came with a Humble Bundle.

Rogue Legacy - PC Game Review

Image
Rogue Legacy is a (very hard) platformer with a playing field that changes every time. And every time you kill, you can restart, but with a couple of major details: you keep whatever gold you had AND you pick one of your descendants to play (that is the legacy part, of course). Here is where you upgrade, mostly. Each descendant can have several characteristics, including being a dwarf, a giant, color blind, near sighted, and much more. Later in the game you can also unlock other types - such as a miner (gets more loot, but is weaker), mage (can choose between spells), and more. Each hero has its own spell, although some can switch between several. This hero had dizziness problem. And text is also inverted... This hero is near sighted. Graphics are obviously a little on the retro side, but are pretty good. There are plenty of unlocks, too. What I don't like is - this is in the rogue style, so it is pretty hard and you will probably die often. Also (and that is...

Awesomenauts - PC Game Review

Image
Awesomenauts is a platform based base attack shooter. It is quite simple. You choose between a bunch of characters - all of which are completely different and get very different extra powers. Some have blasters, other knifes, one has a healing wave. Then you start getting dropped on a rocket (where you weave to get extra coins), which is probably the most annoying mechanic. Next, you can pass by a shop - where you can buy extras specific to your character. For example, one has dynamite and a bull that pushes enemies. Another has a bunch of drones and a healing bot. Each of these powers have a bunch of upgrades, and you choose what you can unlock before each game. Then comes the attack. There are multiple levels (usually) and your objective is to destroy the turrets (mostly to pass them), and then the main drill, at which point you win. One interesting tidbit is that each side generates drones, which are weak but are a major tactical detail as you can hide from turret attacks ...

Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack - PC Game Review

Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack is a platformer with absorb things to grow mechanics. Graphics and sound are pretty good - but I found a few places where it was hard to continue. Other than that gameplay is good, but not great. Not particularly recommended, unless you really are a big fan of platformers.

Stealth Bastard Deluxe - PC Game Review

Image
Stealth Bastard Deluxe is a stealth platformer, but with a twist - instead of being slow and measured like most stealth games, it is much faster paced. In the game you start as a clone with no special equipment. You have a notice of your visibility to cameras at all times, and most of the levels are puzzles that need to be overcome to get to the next level. Some examples of puzzles are syncing to an object that generate shadow or the movement of a camera, pushing objects into buttons, as well as uses of hanging on ledges just above a laser or using them to jump to a specific place. Graphics are retro in a way that servers the game well, and gameplay is fun, although probably only for a limited time at once. You can use an equipment item at once. I have placed screen captures of each. How you earn the items is somewhat interesting - they get unlocked for a sector when you finish the sector boss. And even them, each get unlocked for each level when you play it enough times. ...

Gianna Sisters - Twisted Dreams - PC Game Review

Gianna Sisters - Twisted Dreams is a platformer with a incredibly common twist - the world changes between modes (this time, as invoked by sisters). And naturally, you must keep switching to move along. The game looks good enough, and the music is pretty good (a version of Gianna Sisters from Machinae Supremacy - the original version is better, but it doesn't have to keep playing for such long times). I really don't like the gameplay. It is a platformer, so this is not by itself surprising - I'm not a fan. You go around jumping and avoiding the generic "don't step here" points, and you have a power per sister - one turns into a fireball that can kill monsters and knock down certain walls, and the other spins to glide from point to point. If you like platformers, you might want to try the demo. Otherwise, don't bother.

pid - PC Game Review

Image
pid is a platformer with a gimmick. The big gimmick is that you can throw gems that create "beams". You can use these beams to fly above obstacles or dangers, in vertical, horizontal, and diagonal configurations - it all depends on where you throw the gems. You can also use them to kill enemies - moving them into deadly spikes, for example. The game story is a little on the absurd side. You are a schoolboy who slept in the bus and got dropped by the driver in a strange planet, and now you must find your way home. The graphics are unusual but nice. The gameplay is interesting but it is a platformer with puzzles and with a bit of a slow pace, so I'll not be buying it. If you like platformers, you might want to try the demo.

FLY'N PC Game Review

FLY'N is a platformer, but it is a very unusual one. It does feature some of the genres commonplaces, such as jumping and collecting stuff, but there is plenty of weird features. The graphics are beautiful, in an unusual art style, and so is the music. I have no idea what is going on with the game story, but apparently there is an evil overlord who stole something shiny from something like a tree. You are something (I really have no idea what the main character is supposed to be) running around platforms. You can jump, double-jump, glide, and switch between two visions of the world, which you need to do often to continue on your way. All of the enemies I have seen are a red stuff, which you must not touch. The tutorial is very minimalist (and in fact, I had some trouble figuring out what to do on start). On the other hand, I imagine translating the game will be very easy. The gameplay is somewhat interesting, but a bit repetitive. If you like platformers, you might wa...

Waking Mars - PC Game Review

Waking Mars is an unusual puzzle platformer. In this game, you are a scientist with a jetpack going through a cave on mars. As you go around, you find somewhat forced puzzles that require you to increase the biomass on cave sections to continue. You do this by throwing several kinds of seeds around to achieve the intended effect. You also have to avoid acid pools and dropping rocks and acid. The graphics are OK (the semi static popup faces are quite good), the music is acceptable, but I didn't find the gameplay particularly fun. There is also an Android version.

Mark of the Ninja - PC Game Review

Image
Mark of the Ninja is a stealth platformer. This is not the most popular genre mix (I don't even recall seeing it before), but in this case it works very well. For most of the game, your easiest option is sneaking past your enemies, only killing them when necessary. There are plenty of special moves, such as using a grappling hook (only in the specified places - which solves a common problem with games with hooks where users get on unexpected places and ruin the flow), climbing walls, hiding places, and there are plenty of vents for you to sneak in. One very cool vent move you can make is simply pulling a close by guard into the vent and killing him (there is even a specific bonus - something about a waiting spider). Graphics are great, with finish moves having a zoom and cartoon style. Graphics also include circles displaying sound (both yours and from your enemies). That allows you to judge where your enemies are when you can't see them, as the game uses a proper ...

Deadlight - PC Game Review

Image
Deadlight is a zombie game platformer, with great graphics and a unique style. The platformer part is not very demanding (just regular, long jumps and a wall jump so far). There are a few puzzles, but mostly logical and simple stuff. It also has plenty of checkpoints and quick loads, which is always welcome where a single failed jump can kill you. I don't usually like platformers, but I really like it so far. I will update this as I play more.
